I ask a lot of my brain. Don’t you? Imagine waking up one day and realizing it just isn’t working? I was introduced to that scary idea by the wonderfully eloquent Jill Bolte Taylor. She is the New York Times best selling author of My Stroke of Insight and also the star of one of my favourite TEDTalks. She experienced a massive stroke at a very young age and spent years recovering to where she is today. Her story is powerful and it got me thinking about how to take care of this beautiful mass of cells in our heads that we call the brain.
In naturopathic medicine, we believe in holistic care. So caring for the brain requires a great combination of therapies from what we put in our mouths to what we do with our minds. Nutrition, like healthy fats and whole grains, provide incredible sources of energy for the brain. In fact, many of our neurons are wrapped in fatty tissue to speed up transmission. Exercise, like running and swimming, tonifies the blood vessels encouraging proper flow to the brain. And healing activities like meditation and yoga calm the mind in order for us to think clearly.
There is so much that goes into taking care of our brains. If you’re concerned about your brain function – whether it be memory, headaches, or more – please contact me to discuss all of your brain-health options. Come and visit me at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic.
A healthy brain is just what the (future) doctor ordered.
