Shopping for groceries isn’t my favorite thing to do. I love to cook, but navigating the aisles of your typical big-box location doesn’t do it for me. I much prefer to peruse the stalls of a local farmers market. But when necessity calls I have no choice. This is when I have to call upon my trusted grocery navigation tools.
- Never go hungry. Make sure you have eaten before venturing into the grocery store. This will keep you from topping your cart with unhealthy fare.
- Make a list. Check out your cupboards and fridge before heading to the store so you know what you need. I keep a list on my fridge and on my phone.
- Start in produce. Fill your cart with the freshest local and in-season produce available at your grocery. Here you can learn about Ontario’s local options. Stick to the Clean 15, Dirty Dozen list to help you avoid harmful pesticides while also minding your costs.
- Work the perimter. Once you’ve filled your cart with produce, work the rest of the perimeter of the store. Hit up the butcher and fish monger for fresh cuts and then round through the dairy aisle for eggs, butters, cheeses and yogurts. Just remember to stay away from the fake sugars.
- Venture in if you must. Should you need to gather oats, grains, oils, vinegars and seasonings do so quickly. Just don’t get tempted by the cereal, cracker, or junk aisle where the really evil ingredients reside.
And last but not least, always remember to pick up a few cans to drop off in the food-donation bins at the exit of the store.

Hey Rose, sorry to hear of Jude and your tummy troubles Good work on the lion cake, thguoh In Ontario at least, naturopaths aren’t covered by OHIP, but some benefit plans do cover it. (Our’s covers up to a certain amount) They are very good at looking for the cause rather than just treating a symptom but if you don’t have coverage, you may want to try a doc first and see how it goes.
